Chinese Cultural Festivals at Our Boarding School
At our Chinese boarding school, we take great pride in celebrating traditional Chinese festivals, bringing students together to experience the rich cultural heritage of China. Two of the most significant festivals we celebrate are the Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Chinese New Year – February
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is a time of joy, renewal, and family togetherness. We honour this special occasion with festive decorations, cultural traditions, and, most importantly, delicious food. Our celebrations include visits to the Nan Hua Temple or China Town in Johannesburg, where students can immerse themselves in the vibrant festivities and traditional customs.
Traditional Dishes We Prepare:
Whole fish – Symbolising abundance and prosperity
Whole chicken – Representing family unity and wholeness
Long life noodles – Signifying longevity and happiness
Rice – A staple food that brings comfort and nourishment
Tang Yuan (Sweet rice balls) – Representing family togetherness and unity
Hotpot – Filled with delicious meatballs, vegetables, and Chinese carrot
Dumplings – Symbolising wealth and good fortune
Wontons – Representing new beginnings and happiness
Mid-Autumn Festival – September
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is a time for gratitude, family, and moon appreciation. We make this occasion special by decorating the grass area outside, where students can gather and gaze at the bright full moon.
Traditional Dishes We Enjoy:
Various fruits – Symbolising prosperity and good fortune
Spring rolls – Representing wealth and golden blessings
Dumplings – A festive favourite enjoyed on many occasions
BBQ – The boys take part in grilling meat, learning valuable barbequing skills
Rice – A staple enjoyed in every Chinese meal
Chinese snacks – Offering a variety of sweet and savoury treats
As part of our celebrations, we also paint lanterns, allowing students to express their creativity while embracing the cultural significance of light and hope. These traditions create a warm and joyful atmosphere, strengthening the bond among our boarding family.

在我们的中国寄宿学校，我们非常自豪地庆祝传统的中国节日，让学生们共同体验中国丰富的文化遗产。我们庆祝的两个最重要的节日是春节和中秋节。
春节 – 二月
春节，也被称为农历新年，是一个充满喜悦、更新和家庭团聚的时刻。我们通过节日装饰、传统习俗以及最重要的美食来庆祝这一特殊时刻。我们的庆祝活动包括参观 南华寺 或 约翰内斯堡的唐人街，让学生们沉浸在热闹的节日氛围和传统文化中。我们准备的传统美食：
整鱼 – 象征着年年有余和富足
整鸡 – 代表家庭团圆和完整
长寿面 – 寓意健康长寿
米饭 – 作为主食，带来温饱和满足
汤圆 – 象征着家庭团聚和圆满
火锅 – 里面有美味的肉丸、蔬菜和胡萝卜
饺子 – 象征着财富和好运
云吞 – 代表新的开始和幸福
中秋节 – 九月
中秋节，又称月圆节，是一个表达感恩、家庭团聚和赏月的节日。我们通过在户外草坪上布置装饰，使这个节日更加特别，学生们可以一起观赏明亮的满月。
我们享用的传统美食：
各种水果 – 象征繁荣和好运
春卷 – 代表财富和金色的祝福
饺子 – 传统节日中备受喜爱的美食
烧烤 – 男生们参与烤肉，学习有价值的烧烤技能
米饭 – 每顿中餐中必不可少的主食
中国小吃 – 提供各种甜味和咸味美食
